About Anthony King
In 1978, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila introduced a new course in the Faculty of Arts and Letters – it was a course in Applied Linguistics called Translation. This was the university’s response to the Philippine government’s drive to enhance proficiency in both the English and Tagalog languages as part of the move towards bilingualism. Students taking a Liberal Arts course could major in this new course and be called “Translation Majors.” Anthony was part of the original class of only five students.
But as soon as he got out of school, he found employment in some of the biggest and top-notch advertising and PR agencies in the Philippines at that time. He pursued a successful career, winning awards and getting himself recognized as one of the most influential leaders of the industry spanning a career of more than 30 years. In 2012 Anton moved to Guam, and eventually moved to the US mainland. He now resides near Washington DC.
Since 2014 he has been teaching Tagalog at Diplomatic Language Services, an accredited private school based in Arlington, Virginia, providing language training services to the US federal government, the diplomatic community, and members of the US military.
He also works as a court-appointed interpreter for Ad Astra, also an accredited private contractor based in Silver Spring, Maryland, that provides interpretation services in the Metropolitan Washington DC area. His being a Translation Major during his university days has been a big plus factor for him in these endeavors. He also shares his learnings from his many years in the world of advertising, marketing, and public relations in a blog entitled “Understanding Marketing”, which is published on his personal website, through which he hopes to help the ordinary layman become an informed and educated consumer.
